چکیده

We propose a new subgradient-type method for minimizing extremely large-scale nonsmooth convex functions over “simple” domains. The characteristic features of the method are (a) the possibility to adjust the scheme to the geometry of the feasible set, thus allowing to get (nearly) dimension-independent (and nearly optimal in the large-scale case) rate-of-convergence results for minimization of a convex Lipschitz continuous function over a Euclidean ball, a standard simplex, and a spectahedron (the set of positive semidefinite symmetric matrices, of given size, with unit trace); (b) flexible handling of accumulated information, allowing for tradeoff between the level of utilizing this information and iteration’s complexity. We present extensions of the scheme for the cases of minimizing non-Lipschitzian convex objectives, finding saddle points of convex-concave functions and solving variational inequalities with monotone operators. Finally, we report on encouraging numerical results of experiments with test problems of dimensions up to 66,000.

Convex Euclidean distance embedding for collaborative position localization with NLOS mitigation

One of the challenging problems in collaborative position localization arises when the distance measurements contain Non-Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) biases. Convex optimization has played a major role in modelling such problems and numerical algorithm developments. One of the successful examples is the Semi-Definite Programming (SDP), which translates Euclidean distances into the constraints of positi...

Computation of Peak Output for Inputs Restricted in L2 and L∞ Norms Using Convex Optimization

Control systems design by the principle of matching gives rise to problems of evaluating the peak output. This paper proposes a practical method for computing the peak output of linear time-invariant and non-anticipative systems for a class of possible sets that are characterized with mixed bounding conditions on the twoand/or the infinity-norms of the inputs and their derivatives. The original...

A limited memory adaptive trust-region approach for large-scale unconstrained optimization

This study concerns with a trust-region-based method for solving unconstrained optimization problems. The approach takes the advantages of the compact limited memory BFGS updating formula together with an appropriate adaptive radius strategy. In our approach, the adaptive technique leads us to decrease the number of subproblems solving, while utilizing the structure of limited memory quasi-Newt...

A Weighted Mirror Descent Algorithm for Nonsmooth Convex Optimization Problem

Large scale nonsmooth convex optimization is a common problem for a range of computational areas including machine learning and computer vision. Problems in these areas contain special domain structures and characteristics. Special treatment of such problem domains, exploiting their structures, can significantly improve the computational burden. We present a weighted Mirror Descent method to so...
